There was not one peep in the room this afternoon as students listened to our guest reader: Lt. Steidle from the US Navy! It is not everyday that we get to listen to someone other than Miss Lewis read to us. We were all able to introduce ourselves and ask questions. We can't wait to have another guest reader! If you are interested in coming to read to our class, please contact Miss Lewis!

Author Study

We have begun to learn about Eric Carle as an author. In Reader's Workshop we have begun looking at his books and creating an attribute chart of our noticings. This week we are working on making connections (text-to-self and text-to-text)to his books.
In Writer's Workshop, we are responding to books through retellings, connections, things we learned and/or discovered, and our wonderings. Students are encouraged to talk/respond to books they read at home as well.
We are very excited for our Eric Carle Celebration Day next Friday!

Letter Combinations
In Skills Block we have been learning some new strategies for words that don't always follow the "rules" if we stretch out the sounds. Some of these strategies include letter combinations. Letter combinations are two to three letters that make one sound. The students recite the following chart daily:
ay, ai - see kids play
ir, er, ur - see the church
ar, ar, - drive the car
ow, ou - one brown cow
ing, ing - watch me swing
oy, oi - see the boy
ea, ee - let's go to the beach
oo, oo - the ghost says "boo!"
ue, ew - find the clue
or, or - shut the door
aw, au - I can draw
all, all - catch the ball
We look for letter combinations in words to help us become better readers and writers. Please use this tool to help your child when you are working with them at home!

Pow Wow
We have come to the end of our study of the Sioux tribe. We have learned what they wear, where they live, what they look like, what they eat, and many things about their lifestyle. On Friday we celebrated the end of our study with a Pow Wow. Thank you to everyone who came to watch us perform the songs and dances we have been working so hard on. We had a blast! We got to participate in several centers, such as natural dye painting, tribal games, Native American artifacts, symbol writing, clay, food tasting, and storytelling in a huge teepee! Below are some pictures from our fun-filled day!
